Local Fine Gael Councillor Neale Richmond has urged Dun Laoghaire Rathdowm Council to re-examine basic, simple measures which can and must be taken to prevent and reduce flooding in housing states and on roads throughout our county.

Councillor Richmond has called on the local authority to improve significantly on its drain clearance and maintenance programme.

“It is quite clear that a lot of localised flooding has occurred simply because drains were blocked with leaves and other debris leaving them unable to take the excess flows of water. This results in quite significant problems in terms of road safety when heavy rain when occurs. The Council needs to urgently re-examine its programme of clearing and maintaining drains and gullies,” stated Councillor Richmond.

“In my area both Brehon Field Road & the Grange Road have experienced a build-up of floodwaters owing to a blockage of debris in the shores. I have contacted the Area Engineer and brought this issue to his attention. The local authority must be more systematic in its approach to drain clearing particularly if we are to continue to receive such heavy rain,” continued Councillor Richmond.

“I will continue to pursue this matter at the upcoming meetings of the Dundrum Area Committee and the County Council,” concluded Councillor Richmond.
