‘No’ leaflet delivered inside Referendum Commission brochure

Local Fine Gael County Councillor Neale Richmond has voiced his concern and anger at the fact that the official Referendum Commission information leaflet on the upcoming referendum was delivered to his home and many others with a second leaflet from the British UK Independence Party (UKIP) advocating a No vote folded up inside it.

“The Referendum Commission is an independent non-political body set up to explain the Fiscal Stability Treaty in a fair and unbiased way. Therefore I was shocked when I received the leaflet yesterday to my home in Ballinteer and folded inside was another leaflet from UKIP advocating a “No” vote.

“This represents a tangible threat to the democratic process in Ireland. I would be equally concered if the Referendum Commission’s leaflet was delivered with literature from the “Yes” campaign.

“I respect the right of groups, even those from outside Ireland, to campaign for a ‘No’ vote. However, the feedback from those who are undecided is that they will make their minds up once they have received and read the independent information distributed by the Referendum Commission.
“Both leaflets look similar and I fear some people will be influenced by this mix up,”

“An Post secured the €190,000 contract to deliver the leaflets to over two million households across the country and this mix up has been replicated across the country. This should not have happened and this gaff by An Post undermines the important, neutral role of the Referendum Commission.”

Internship scheme to be opened up to help lone parents and disabled people access the workforce

Local Fine Gael Councillor, Neale Richmond has welcomed changes which will see the National Internship Scheme, Jobbridge, expanded.

“I have argued for these changes since the introduction of the JobBridge scheme last July and I am glad to see the Minister for Social Protection taking action to remedy the anomaly which saw some groups excluded from taking part.

“Extending the JobBridge scheme to include participants who are in receipt of One Parent Family Payment or the Disability Allowance will help break down the barriers that prevent these vulnerable groups from re-entering the workforce.

“It is a testament to the importance of the scheme that 1,000 extra JobBridge places will also be made available.

“The JobBridge Scheme helps those seeking employment to gain valuable experience, and companies taking part must provide appropriate training and development experiences to interns. Almost 2,000 people have completed the programme, which can last for either 6 or 9 months, since the launch of the scheme 10 months ago. Of these almost 40% have been successful in finding full-time employment.”
